USEFUL INFORMATION

Climate:

The temperature varies from about 20C in August to about 26C in February.
Along the coastal areas, it generally 3C to 5C higher. The Western and Nothern regions are drier than the East and the South.

What to Wear:

Take your best beach and casual wear for the summer season. In the full winter month of June, July, August and September carry some light woolens clothes for the cool evenings.

Tax & Tipping:

A 15% valued added tax (VAT) is added to all hotel and restaurant bill. Tipping is not compulsory and still remains a gesture of appreciation from the guest.

Banking Hours:

Monday to Thursday: 09h15 - 15h15
Friday: 09h15 - 15h30 (Some banks: 09h00 - 17h00)
Saturday: 09h15 - 11h15 (Some banks only)

Banking facilities exist in all towns and villages. Banks operate at the arrival and departure of international flights in the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport lounges. Traveller's cheques and bank notes may also be exchanged in the main hotels. Credit Crads are accepted by banks, hotels, restaurants and tourist shops.

 

Language:

English is the official language and is widely understood across the island.
French and Creole predominate in everyday life. And since Mauritius has a multi-cultural society, a number of oriental languages are also spoken.
